What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating, and is treated as a condition. This is somewhat a common condition that affects people throughout the world. It may happen on the full body, but is often restricted to some areas, for example there are people suffering from hand sweating, or armpit sweating and even face sweating.

The hyperhidrosis occurs no matter the body temperature, clothes or emotions, (although anxiety and nervousness can trigger the sweat much more easily) and this is why it is a tough condition to deal with.

The cause for hyperhidrosis is not actually known, but doctors are inclined to think its appearance is linked to the nervous system. There are various treatments for hyperhidrosis. These include:

• Surgery, called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy. This involves cutting nerves, and can cause anhidrosis.

• Aluminum chloride solutions. Being the most common Drysol, Maxim, Odaban and Driclor.

• Botulinum toxic, mostly know as Botox. This is used to disable the sweat glands and lasts up to nine months.

• Iontophoresis, that is a procedure with a device with water and a conductor. And the goal is to limit the quantity of sweat produced by the sweat glands.

• Oral medications such as Ditropan, Robinul and others. Although you have to keep in mind that no oral medication has been approved by the FDA.

• Biofeedback, an alternative treatment, that basically help people be aware of the body functions.

• Loss of weight. Obesity can help trigger hyperhidrosis.

• Hypnosis. This treatment has been suggested by many persons although not enough scientific studies have been made to back up its effectiveness.

• Meditation and relaxing. A relaxed state of mind, when fully mastered can help specially if the sweating is heavily augmented by anxiety.

As with all, these various treatments have their pros and cons, and a proper consultation with a doctor should be of critical help to decide how to deal with the issue of hyperhidrosis.
